On My Shelf… Gifts

Okay… My “To Read” pile might have grown due to gifts to myself, but I was super excited to pick up these new reads!

  1. Death in Daylesford by Kerry Greenwood

Description: When lady detective Phyrne Fisher receives an invitation to a spa holiday from the unknown retired Captain Herbert Spencer, she is up for the adventure. However, she soon finds the trip anything but tranquil as as the must investigate women’s disappearances and a string of murders in 1920s Australia.

Why I’m Excited to Read: I’m obsessed with the show Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and have only read a few of the books. I’m excited to see Phryne in a new mystery (and one that I won’t know the answers to from watching the show repeatedly.) I like that the setting is a spa holiday and can’t wait to see Phyrne and Dot in action again.

2. A Cold Nose for Murder by Jennifer Hawkins

Description: Emma Reed is trying to focus on her tea shop in the Cornish village of Trevena, but when a priceless motorcycle and a skeleton are discovered, her two friends who own an antique shop become the prime suspects in a forty year old mystery. With the help of her talking corgi, Oliver, she will try to clear their names before their reputations are ruined.

Why I’m Excited to Read: I read the first two books in this series and found them utterly charming. I love reading Oliver’s Welsh doggie descriptions of smells and can’t wait to see how this mystery is solved.

3. On Spine of Death by Tamara Berry

Description: Bestselling mystery author Tess Harrow and her teenage daughter Gertrude have decided to stay in Winthrop, but when cabin renovations reveal a skeleton, her deceased grandfather is labeled a serial killer. Eager to prove his innocence and solve this cold case, Tess brings in horror writer reinforcements to assist.

Why I’m Excited to Read: This is the sequel to Buried in a Good Book, which I found hilarious! I hope this one will keep me laughing and guessing as much as the last book did. I loved the main character’s voice because she is a mystery writer and always has amusing anecdotes and thoughts on murder.

4. The Maid by Nita Prose

Description: Molly Gray struggles with social skills and often misreads people, but excels in her work as a hotel maid. However, when a wealthy man is killed in a hotel suite, Molly becomes the prime suspect. She must find a way to make sense of what has happened and find the real killer.

Why I’m Excited to Read: So many people have sung this book’s praises and I am excited to see why. I’m also a huge fan of a well-crafted locked-room mystery!

I think a good book is the perfect present, so I don’t mind if my shelves get fuller and fuller!
