On My Shelf… for the Summer

Summer seems like the perfect time to catch up on some reading! These are some books I’m excited to check out while I’m in a beach chair with my toes in the sand.

  1. Because I Could Not Stop for Death by Amanda Flower

Description: January 1855. Amherst, Massachusetts. Willa Noble begins working for the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson, but when Willa believes her brother has been murdered, the pair wind up involved in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Why I’m Excited to Read: I think I’ve mentioned that I’m a big Amanda Flower fan after enjoying her Farm to Table series (which was on my list of favorite reads last year) and Amish Candy Shop Mysteries. This new book of hers won the Agatha Award for “Best Historical Novel,” so I am pumped to read this Emily Dickinson Mystery.

2. Murder is a Piece of Cake by Valerie Burns

Description: Somewhat spoiled influencer Maddy Montgomery has been learning about friendship and baking after inheriting her aunt’s bakery business. However, when a new bakery opens in New Bison, it spells trouble for Maddy, her mastiff, and Baby Cakes. When the new owner is found murdered, Maddy becomes #primesuspect. She’ll need the help of the Baker Street Irregulars to clear her name.

Why I’m Excited to Read: I found the first book in this series funny and delightful, so I am excited to check out this new release. I love books where characters are forced to grow - and where they care of giant dogs and solve murders.

3. Pleading the Fish by Bree Baker

Description: When a historian looking into Everly Swan’s family history is found dead in a wishing well, Everly suspects the curse on her family and love life is in full swing. However, with the help of her fiance Detective Grady Hayes, she might be able to solve the case and get some answers.

Why I’m Excited to Read: This setting is so summery, it makes for the perfect beach read! I can’t wait to revisit this tea shop and see if Everly’s cursed love life will change.
