Why I Love Cozy Mysteries

Why cozies?

I think I’ve always gravitated toward a good mystery. I was obsessed with the Wee Sing “Marvelous Musical Mansion” as kid and deducing “who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?” As I grew I read every Nancy Drew I could get my hands on, and I waited weekly for “The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo.” I binged Agatha Christie books in high school and watched every episode of “Murder, She Wrote.” I loved picking up on clues and seeing if I could solve the case before my favorite sleuths.

Now, my love of mysteries has funneled into a passion for cozy ones. Reading and watching them makes me happy. There’s something about cozy mysteries that are special.

These stories are an escape from the real world to a new town with quirky characters that start to feel like friends. Within these pages, the main character comes across the worst thing that could possibly happen (a murder!) and finds a way to ensure that justice is served. Following their journey, we get to use our smarts to see if we can come up with the same answer that they do and often get to laugh at how their interrogations play out.

These are not stories that will give me nightmares and if they keep me up at night it’s because I want to read “just one more chapter” before bed.

What makes them even sweeter is that they often feature an adorable animal companion or showcase a new hobby or recipe that I love reading about. There is usually often an element of romance where you can root for the main character to fall in love with someone worthy of them and their awesome crime-solving skills.

I love curling up with one of these books feeling warm and cozy inside while still fueling my curiosity and love for puzzles.

In fact, I think it’s time to pick up my next read…
